LOCAL POET HAS DISPLAYED HIS TALENT IN SEVERAL GENRES
Most people have attempted to write poetry. In the flush of a romance, or the abyss of depression, words flow easily from the pen. Yet few can capture universal truths in a rhythm that echoes the perfectly chosen words. Few people sell, or even share their poetry. David Alpaugh is that exception. His first collection, Counterpoint, garnered the 1994 Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize. The Greatest Hits of David Alpaugh will be published this year by Pudding House Publications as part of its Gold Series. In addition, his poems have appeared in over 50 literary magazines, anthologies and journals including Exquisite Corpse , The Formalist, Poet & Critic, Poetry, and ZYZZYVA. Not limited by one muse, he has also published drama, fiction and criticism, as well as doing public readings in Bay Area poetry venues, where his humor makes him a popular draw. He shares his love of poetry in his UC Berkeley Extension classes in Walnut Creek.
Alpaugh was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and the University of California, Berkeley, where he held Woodrow Wilson and Ford Foundation Fellowships and received his M.A. degree in English. For fifteen years he worked as an advertising director for a California bank and for a chain of business and technical schools. In 1987 he started his own desktop publishing business, Small Poetry Press, a chapbook design and printing service for self-publishing poets. Alpaugh resides in Pleasant Hill.
David Alpaugh read some of his poetry and told us about "Professionalization: Its Impact on the Art of Poetry." His humorous poetry had all of us giggling.
