SWITCHING GEARS WITH RHYS BOWEN
Many writers happily spend a career in one genre, never daring to start anew. Successful writers are actually discouraged from plowing new ground; their readers might rebel.
Rhys Bowen, radio and TV writer, mystery and children's author continually reinvents herself, her talent nimbly adapting to each new challenge. Bowen's expertise in radio and television plays in London didn't translate here - we had nothing like the BBC. So, she wrote first picture books, then moved on to young adult novels, resulting in a catalog of almost 100 books.
Then, like so many of us, she decided to write the kind of thing she liked to read, in her case, mysteries. Her critically acclaimed Constable Evans mysteries were the result. "As satisfying as a Guiness pint," wrote one reviewer. "A jewel of a story," wrote Publisher's Weekly.
One series is not enough for this author. Bowen
began
a new series of historical mysteries beginning with Murphy's Law,
which debuted in October 2001.
