BE A FREELANCER - WRITE ABOUT (ALMOST) ANYTHING

Ethan Watters has been a full-time freelance writer for ten years. He has written for The New York Times Magazine, Spin, Mother Jones, Society, GQ, Details, Wired, HG, California, and San Francisco Focus, among other regional and national publications. He has also created pieces for NPR's "This American Life" and associate produced a film documentary on young people with the AIDS virus. He is currently working on a book with the working title: Urban Tribes of the Never-Marrieds. His two previous books, Therapy's Delusions, and Making Monsters were both collaborations with UC Berkeley professor Richard Ofshe and published by Scribners. Watters has worked on the staffs of Harper's Magazine, San Francisco Magazine and Mother Jones.

In 1996, He co-founded (with Ethan Canin and Po Bronson) the San Francisco Writers' Grotto, a workspace for journalist, novelists and filmmakers. Entertainment Weekly called the Grotto, "one of the few solid American literary communities outside the media centers of New York and L.A."

Watters will talk about how to write and market essays. He will also offer some words of advice on how to freelance to magazines and newspapers.
