Molly Giles’ first collection, Rough Translations, received the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction, the Boston Globe Award, the Bay Area Book Reviewers Award for Fiction, and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. She has won numerous other writing awards, including a PEN Syndicated Fiction Award and a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Award. The O'Connor Award, given annually for two short story manuscripts, includes publication by the University of Georgia Press.
In her latest book, Creek Walk and Other Stories, Giles weaves stories of women struggling to become visible in a world of men, reaching-out to change their lives and save themselves. These women — doctors, house- wives, activists, students, and teachers — break the old patterns that have held them back and kept them silent. This latest collection again deals with the theme of missed connections begun with her first book.
Over the years, she has had the likes of Amy Tan, Gus Lee and Melba Beals in a writing group. Ms. Giles has a master's degree in English and is Professor of Creative Writing at San Francisco State University. She lives in Woodacre, California.
